State Testing- FAQ-Everything you need to know.

State by State

Section 01

Which Test Does My Child Need to Take?

State testing requirements depend on where you live. Your child's required assessments are listed in your parent portal under the Assessments tab. Here is a quick overview by state:

State Test Name Format Key Detail
Utah RISE + Acadience Online (RISE) and Zoom video call (Acadience) Two separate assessments — RISE uses a secure browser, Acadience is a live Zoom session with a proctor
Oregon OSAS (Smarter Balanced) Online via Secure Browser Each subject has two parts: CAT and PT. Both must be completed. See Section 4.
Indiana ILearn In-person at a designated location In-person only — confirm your location, date, and time from your portal
Kansas KAP Online via Secure Browser Requires a desktop or laptop — iPads and tablets are not supported
Iowa ISASP Online via Secure Browser Includes a proctor Zoom call — wait for the session to begin before starting
Washington SBAC Online via Secure Browser (TestNav) Download TestNav before test day
All other states Varies Check your portal Your Assessments tab shows exactly what is required for your child
Good to Know State tests are taken at your child's enrolled grade level— not their instructional level. If your child is working at a different level, they still take the test for the grade they are enrolled in.
Section 02

How to Find Your Child's SSID and Session Code

This is the most common question we get during testing season. Your child's SSID and session code are not sent by email — they live in your parent portal. Here is exactly where to find them:

  1. 1
Log in to your parent portal at opened.co
  2. 2
    Click on your child's name
  3. 3
Scroll down to the Assessments section
  4. 4
Click the box labeled Additional School Specific Information
  5. 5
Your child's SSID and session code will appear there. Each subject has its own session code — do not reuse the math code for science or ELA.

Common SSID Issues

The SSID is not showing or shows as missing

Your child may need to be registered in the state system first. This cannot be fixed on your end. Contact our support team and we will resolve it — please reach out as early as possible before your test date.

The secure browser says my SSID is formatted incorrectly

Enter the numbers only. No spaces, dashes, or extra characters of any kind. Copy it directly from your portal if possible.

The SSID pulls up a different student's name

Stop immediately and do not proceed. Contact support — this needs to be corrected in the state system before your child can test.

The Additional School Specific Information box won't open or loads forever

Try a different browser or clear your cache. If it still will not open, contact support right away — especially if your test is coming up soon.

Section 03

How to Access and Start the Test

For RISE, OSAS, KAP, ISASP, and SBAC (Secure Browser Tests)

1. Download the OpenEd secure browser before test day. Find the download link in your portal under the Assessments tab.

2. Close every other application on the computer — web browsers, messaging apps, Microsoft Teams, Notes, iMessage, everything. This includes apps running in the background. Restart the computer if you want to be sure.

3. Open the secure browser and nothing else.

4. Enter your child's first name and SSID exactly as shown in your portal.

5. Enter the session code when prompted.

6. Wait for proctor approval. Your child will see a waiting screen — this is normal. A proctor will admit them shortly.

For Acadience (Utah — Zoom Video Call)

  • You will receive a Zoom link by email before your scheduled appointment. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive.
  • Download and print the worksheets from your portal under the Assessments tab before the session begins.
  • Acadience has two worksheet types: Concepts and Applications and Math Facts. Make sure you have the right one for your child's grade.
  • If no one joins the Zoom at your scheduled time, contact support immediately — do not wait.

Error Messages and What They Mean

"You cannot log in until the following programs are closed"

Force quit every open application — including ones running in the background like Teams, Notes, iMessage, and Chrome. Restart the computer if the error persists. This message sometimes appears even when apps are already closed — a full restart usually resolves it.

"Unsupported OS/Browser Combination"

Make sure you downloaded the OpenEd-specific secure browser from your portal — not a regular web browser. Also check that your operating system meets the minimum requirements. If you are on a Chromebook, see Section 9.

"Session does not exist"

The session code has expired — this usually happens after the computer restarts or the browser is closed. Contact support for a new session code before trying again.

"Session is closed"

The test window has closed. Contact support right away to request it be reopened.

"Testee token is invalid"

Exit the secure browser completely and reopen it from scratch. If the error appears again, contact support.

"Test must be resumed by the proctor"

The test was paused or interrupted and a proctor must manually resume it. Contact support immediately — this cannot be resolved without our team.

Waiting for approval screen — no one is letting my child in

A proctor needs to admit your child to the test session. If more than 5 minutes have passed from the scheduled start time and no one has joined, contact support directly through live chat. Do not close the browser.

Quick Tip Your child is allowed to use scrap paper and a pencil during all math tests. There is no restriction on this.
Section 04

OSAS (Oregon): Understanding CAT and PT

Oregon's OSAS assessment has two separate parts for each subject. This is one of the most common sources of confusion for Oregon families — here is how it works:

Part What It Is What to Know
CAT Computer Adaptive Test — adjusts difficulty based on your child's answers Taken first. Requires its own session code.
PT Performance Task — a longer project-based response Taken second, often on a different day. Requires its own session code.
  • Both parts must be completed. If your child finishes only the CAT, the test is not done.
  • ELA has two separate sessions: ELA 1 (CAT) and ELA 2 (PT). These can be scheduled on different days.
  • Do not reuse session codes. Each part requires its own code from your portal.
  • If your child only completed the CAT, contact support to schedule the PT separately.
About Opting Out of Individual Sections- You can opt out of each part of OSAS separately — ELA 1 and ELA 2 are considered distinct. If the portal will not allow you to opt out of a specific section (this is a known issue with ELA 2), contact support and we will handle it on our end.
Section 05

Scheduling, Rescheduling, and Opting Out

How to Schedule

  1. Go to your parent portal → Assessments tab
  2. Click Not Scheduled next to each test your child needs to take
  3. Select a date and time from the available slots
  4. Each child must be scheduled individually — there is no bulk scheduling option
  5. Each subject (Math, ELA, Science) is scheduled as a separate session

How to Reschedule

  • Use the rescheduling link in your original confirmation email
  • If the date has already passed or the link gives an error, contact support directly
  • If you need to reschedule due to a technology problem or illness, contact support — we can help
  • If your confirmation email shows a different date than your portal, confirm with support which one is correct before test day

How to Opt Out

  • Go to your portal → Assessments → select Opt Out next to each test
  • Opt out must be completed for each child and each test individually
  • If you opted out but are still receiving reminders to schedule, this is usually a display delay. If your portal shows the opt out as confirmed, you are all set. Contact support if you want us to verify.
  • Opting out does not affect your standing in the OpenEd program.
Scheduling Tip If you are scheduling multiple children, you must go through the scheduling process for each one separately. The system does not allow you to book all children in one step.
Section 06

During the Test — When Something Goes Wrong

My child paused the test, got up, or stepped away — now they can't get back in

Keep the secure browser open. Do not close it. The session stays active while the browser is open. When your child returns, they should be able to resume. If they are locked out, contact support immediately and a proctor can resume access.

The computer died or the internet dropped in the middle of the test

Reopen the secure browser and try to log back in with the same SSID and session code. If the session shows as expired, contact support right away — the sooner you reach us, the easier it is to recover the session.

The screen froze or the audio/video stopped working

Do not force close the test. Leave everything open and contact support before doing anything else. Closing the browser can make it harder to recover the session.

We were late starting and my child is stuck on the approval waiting screen

A proctor needs to manually admit your child. If more than 5 minutes have passed and no one has let them in, contact support through live chat immediately. Do not close the browser or navigate away.

My child accidentally started the wrong test

Contact support immediately and do not let your child continue. Test sessions can often be reset if we catch it early. The longer the test runs, the harder it is to undo.

My child ran out of time and did not finish

Contact support to request a reschedule for the remainder of the test. Do not close the browser. Most tests can be resumed with proctor involvement.

I never received the agreement / PandaDoc to sign, and now my child cannot access the test

Check your email spam folder first. If you signed it but your child is still blocked from testing, contact support with the date you signed. This is a known sync delay that our team can resolve on the back end.

My child did not finish both parts of the math test — I thought they were done

Some tests (like OSAS) have a CAT part and a PT part. Finishing the CAT does not mean the test is complete. Check your portal's Assessments tab to see if a second session still needs to be scheduled. If you are unsure, contact support.

Section 07

After the Test

When will we get our child's results?

Results appear in your parent portal under the Assessments tab once the state releases scores. Timelines vary by state — RISE results are typically available within a few weeks of testing. ILearn (Indiana) results take longer. Your child's teacher can also help interpret scores when they are available.

The test shows completed but my portal still says incomplete or not scheduled

Allow 24 to 48 hours for the portal to sync. If the status has not updated after that, contact support with your child's name and the test they completed.

The portal shows "No Show" but my child did take the test

This is a known tagging issue. Contact support with your child's name, the test name, and the date they tested — we can correct this on the back end.

Can my child retake a test?

Contact support as soon as possible. Whether a test can be resumed or retaken depends on the state and how far the test progressed. For Indiana iRead specifically, a retake window is available in May — your child's teacher will reach out with details.

What happens if my child does not pass?

Your child's teacher will reach out with next steps and support resources. Retesting windows vary by state. This does not affect your child's enrollment with OpenEd — our team will work with you on a plan.

Can we review the test questions with our child after testing?

You can access your child's scores in your portal. The test questions themselves are not available for review as they are secure state assessments — but your child's teacher can walk through the results and areas to focus on.

Section 08

Indiana ILearn — In-Person Testing

ILearn is Indiana's state assessment and is the only test in the OpenEd program that requires in-person attendance at a physical location. It is not completed online from home.

  • Subjects tested: Math, ELA, and Science (varies by grade)
  • Locations: In-person at sites across Indiana such as La Porte, Angola, and others. Your location is shown in your portal.
  • Confirm your date and time before you go. The date shown on your dashboard and the confirmation email have occasionally not matched. If you see a discrepancy, contact support to confirm.
  • Time zones: Indiana testing locations use Central Time. Confirm which time zone applies to your location.
  • Changing locations: If a closer location has been added, contact support to request a change — this requires manual reassignment on our end.
  • Practice resources: Math and ELA have checkpoint activities in the platform. There are no official practice tests for the Science portion — review general science concepts appropriate for your child's grade.
  • Results timeline: ILearn results take longer than online tests. Your child's teacher will reach out when scores are available.
Section 09

Device and Technology Requirements

We only have a Chromebook — can we use it for testing?

The OpenEd secure browser cannot be installed on most Chromebooks. A Windows or Mac computer is required for secure browser-based tests. If a Chromebook is your only device, contact support before your test date — our team can advise on available options.

We only have an iPad

iPads are not supported for KAP (Kansas) testing or most secure browser-based assessments. A desktop or laptop is required. If you do not have access to one, contact support as early as possible before your test date.

Our computer is old and the secure browser will not install

Check the minimum system requirements listed in your portal. If your computer does not meet them, contact support — we may be able to help arrange an alternative or assist with the opt out process.

The secure browser installed but we cannot figure out how to start the test

After opening the secure browser, you should see a login screen asking for your child's first name and SSID. If you are past that screen and stuck, contact support through live chat — our team can walk you through it in real time.

Section 10

Practice Resources to Prepare Your Child

OpenEd provides several tools to help your child feel prepared and confident before state testing:

Resource Best For Where to Find It
Study Island Math and ELA practice for all grade levels Log in through your parent portal or via Clever
Exact Path Adaptive practice that adjusts to your child's level Access through your parent portal
Lexia Reading practice — especially helpful for Indiana iRead retake prep Access through your parent portal. Recommended by OpenEd teachers over Exact Path and Study Island for iRead prep.
OSAS Practice Test Oregon families preparing for OSAS Available as a guest login on the state testing website. Note: guest mode does not save results.
Recorded teacher sessions All states — especially helpful for reviewing concepts before testing Ask your Family Success Manager for links to your child's recorded daily sessions
Indiana Science Prep-There are no official practice tests for the ILearn Science portion. The best preparation is reviewing general science topics appropriate for your child's grade — your child's teacher can provide guidance on what to focus on.

Still Need Help?

If your test is happening right now and something is wrong — contact us immediately via live chat. Do not close any browsers or applications first. Our team can often recover sessions and resolve issues in real time when we are brought in quickly.

For scheduling, rescheduling, or opt out questions that are not time-sensitive, our support team typically responds within a few hours.

A Note From Our Team-Testing can feel stressful — especially the first time. Please know that our team handles testing questions every day and we are here to help. The more detail you can share about what is happening (error messages, test name, what you already tried), the faster we can get your child into their session. You are not alone in this.
